Lunch and Learn

We are here to talk to you about cosmetic dentistry. As dentists and dental teams we are so lucky. We have the best profession because what we do has such a huge impact on peoples lives. People want to look better and feel younger. They want to be healthy more so now than ever. They don't want to look like their parents as they age, they want to keep looking young. As we all know, teeth and smiles can be related to some ones self image in a big way. People who hide their smiles, consciously or unconsciously, negatively affect those around them and reinforces their poor self image. Cosmetic dentistry is becoming increasingly popular thanks to modern improvements in dentistry, popular TV shows and magazines. So as dental professionals we need to be prepared, by being informed and educated to answer questions and provide a product for the consumer that is healthy and natural, and leaves them healthier than they where when they came to the office. The AACD did some research and they found that 99% of Americans felt that the smile was an important feature when evaluating the opposite sex and over three quarters of Americans thought a smile was indicative of success and social status. Here is guest of ours names Christy. We first met Christy a couple years ago and we took her to a course....

So there is a big difference between cosmetic dentistry which we all do and smile enhancement dentistry some of us do with varying degrees of confidence, experience and passion. Cosmetic dentistry is white stuff, while smile enhancement procedures focus on treating the smile as a whole while taking into account the health of the entire mouth. We learn to do cosmetic dentistry from vendors, short courses and journals. Cosmetic dentistry needs to be learned in postgraduate education programs offered across the country. It involves veneers for smile enhancement, occlusion for health and force management, TMJ and muscle, prep design, porcelain systems, techniques for bonding and isolation and the list goes on. We spent over 1,200 hours together learning to do it right, because we realized the more smiles we wanted to do and the more challenging the transformation, the more we had to understand occlusion, TMJ, muscles, and long term health and maintenance of the porcelain restorations.
