This surgery involves movements of the jawbones. This surgery can be used to move the upper to correct a gummy smile or lower jaw forward or backwards to correct a patient's profile. Usually a patient will have orthodontic treatment to position the teeth in as ideal position as possible before the surgery. This surgery can takes anywhere from a few hours to as long as eight hours. Once the surgery is finished, braces are used to wire the mouth closed for about one month while the bone fuses. Healing can take as long as several months in some cases. An oral surgeon would perform this type of surgery.
