If take-home trays are the best option for you, the process is easy. We will take impressions of your top and bottom teeth to make a custom whitening tray that which is a clear tray that comfortably fits over your teeth. Whitening gel containing Hydrogen peroxide or Carbomide peroxide is placed in the tray about the size of a pea for each tooth being whitened. As the peroxide breaks down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to lighten discolorations. The structure is not changed; only the color is made lighter. Results are usually noticed after the first application, and maximum results generally occur after 3 to 14 days of treatment.
This is the most intense fastest way to white teeth by bleaching. We use Ultra Zoom! by Discus Dental. The procedure takes about an hour. Pick a movie from our library. You will have two flat screen televisions to watch your movie. Your teeth will be evaluated for whitening effectiveness by the doctor prior to under going the procedure. We will give you our honest evaluation if whitening is right for your teeth.
Retractors will be placed in your mouth to keep your lips out of the way of the bleach and light. Your teeth will be isolated from your gums by a special liquid dam material that blocks out tissue that may get harmed by the concentrated bleach. You will wear special glasses that filter out the UV light from the lamp.
Upon completion of the isolating process, Zoom bleach will be placed on the top and bottom teeth and the light will start the whitening process. 3 applications of bleach for 15 minutes each. At the end of the 3 sessions we place a liquid fluoride on the teeth to decrease the amount of post operative sensitivity. We will take your shade after to confirm the results. Our experience with this is that to some extent there is some dehydration of the teeth immediately after whitening that interferes with an accurate post whitening shade. Shade change is best evaluated a couple days after the treatment.
Both systems work just as well as the other, the main differences are the tray system takes 10-14 days to reach optimal results, whereas you get similar results in just hour with ZOOM!, and with the trays you may experience more sensitivity because you're bleaching for almost 2 weeks, but you only experience 24 hours of sensitivity with ZOOM!.
