"I don't want my teeth ground down" and "I don't want them to look big, bulky, or fake" and "my dentists told me veneers don't work".
Too often we hear during consultations that they do not want veneers because they do not want their teeth ground down. Someone they know went to a dentist and the dentist told them that they do not think that they should ruin their teeth, or a friend or family member had a crown or some aggressive work done to their teeth and the dentist ground the teeth down to “little pegs.” So instead of having the smile they dream of, they deal with what they have and never really like their teeth.
Veneer preps are not as aggressive as typical crown preps. We can show many different photos of what teeth look like when they are reshaped, it is very minimal in most cases. There are still many dentists who will grind down the teeth to pegs because they have no training in veneers-what a crime! Let's get something straight; dentists have been grinding down healthy tooth structure since the beginning of the profession. We are taught to do bridges in dental school. Bridges are done by most dentists by aggressively grinding down two healthy teeth in order to replace a missing one. Dentists also extract healthy teeth in both children and adults for cosmetics when doing braces. The whole tooth! Not just .5mm of enamel that may be discolored or ugly anyway.
As far as the fake look, this is where we differ. Look at Dr Colleen's veneers, nobody, even dentists, have been able to detect that they are porcelain. Our porcelain and lab does a fantastic job with color and vitality on the front teeth. We strive to make porcelain look natural, regardless of the color. This is why other dentists, specialists, and their wives seek us out to do their smile makeovers.
Now then, why would a dentist be so opposed to doing veneers? They don't know how to do them. They tried a couple times, had bad results, or trouble pleasing their patients and rather than admitting their failure or spending the time and money on learning to do something they really don't care enough to learn about, they tell you something they read in a dental magazine or heard from a dentist friend.
